The Fort Worth Transportation and Public Works Department has been awarded $254,569 in federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funding for local projects that will make walking or biking to school  safer and more convenient for children.

The funds will be used to redesign three crosswalks to include pedestrian refuge islands and install two bike lanes and one bike route along with vehicle speed feedback signs. The improvements will be made near three Keller Independent School District campuses in Fort Worth: Park Glen Elementary, Parkwood Hill Intermediate and Hillwood Middle schools.

The Texas Transportation Commission approved 200 new SRTS projects that total approximately $54.1 million in funding. Local communities will use the funds for educational programs and infrastructure improvements that make it safer for Texas children to walk or bike to school. The program also provides funding for outreach programs to educate children and raise public awareness about the benefits of biking and walking.

SRTS projects and activities improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption and air pollution near elementary and middle schools.

TxDOT received more than 280 project applications totaling $78.7 million in funding requests from communities statewide. Applications were reviewed by TxDOT staff and the department’s Bicycle Advisory Committee. The commission awarded 200 of those requests.
