RED HELMETS

The RED HELMETS is an organization of dedicated civilian volunteers that have been serving refreshments and smiles to the Fort Worth Fire Department for more than 35 years. Our membership is made up of ordinary citizens from all walks of life that are willing to give their time and energy back to the community. Our focus is to provide meals, refreshment and encouragement to our public safety personnel at emergency incidents.

While our members are not trained in firefighting, we are proud that some of our past members are now currently serving with the Fort Worth Fire Department, as well as, other local emergency services. In addition, some current members are retired firefighters who wanted to continue being a part of the great "fire service family."

The RED HELMETS are on call all day, every day. We respond as requested by the Fort Worth Fire Department. The Fire Department Alarm Office will notify the RED HELMETS dispatcher of an incident, who then contacts the members to respond. During drizzling freezing weather, wet raining nights and hot summer days, the RED HELMETS will be there. Some activities are also planned in advance, such as displays, air shows and public events.

The RED HELMETS are proud to operate the Fort Worth Fire Department - Canteen Unit. The current Canteen is our third unit since the group started and it was placed into service in 2005. This truck is equipped with a heat and AC unit, microwave, and coffee maker. We carry a large compliment of water, sodas, sports drinks, and other snacks, as needed based on the weather. The Canteen Unit responds to all two alarm and greater fires. We also respond to other incidents by request and as back up for the FWFD Rehab Unit.

Volunteering for a meaningful organization such as the RED HELMETS is a very rewarding experience. Our only incentive is knowing that we have helped our firefighters perform their important responsibilities. We all know that their heartfelt THANK YOU is truly meant. Working with the Fort Worth Fire Department allows us to meet and associate with an outstanding group of dedicated people. Supporting them is a privilege, not a task.

They are held the first Monday of every month, except September and December, at the Fort Worth Fire Department - Supply Building, 2900 West Bolt Street.
