Mayor urges Fort Worth to ‘Go Purple’ to support TCU baseball
For the first time in school history, the TCU baseball program earned a spot in the NCAA’s College World Series, and to help celebrate the achievement, Mayor Mike Moncrief is urging Fort Worth to show its support with a “Go Purple Weekend” June 18-20. Fort Worth City Manager Dale Fisseler agreed to allow city employees to participate in “Go Purple Day” on Friday, June 18, and Moncrief urged local employers large and small alike to do the same through the weekend.
“Fort Worth is proud of what Coach Jim Schlossnagle and his team has been able to accomplish,” said Moncrief. “Reaching the College World Series in Omaha for the first time in school history is the capper on a great run of accomplishments for the TCU athletic programs, all of which has translated into priceless national exposure for the university and our great city.
“While you’re out working, running errands or catching up on chores, make sure you show Coach Schlossnagle and the Frogs your support and wear your purple all weekend long,” Moncrief said. “TCU wasn’t invited to the College World Series — they had to earn their ticket to Omaha, and that’s exactly what they did. Let’s show this team just how proud we are of their historic run. Go Frogs!”
The fourth-ranked Horned Frogs (51-12) advanced to the CWS in Omaha by winning a best-of-three Super Regional series with second-seeded Texas (50-13), clinching their berth with a 4-1 win Sunday in Austin. The win also reversed a three-game loss to the Longhorns in the Super Regionals last season.
TCU will face Florida State (47-18) in the first game of the CWS at 1 p.m. Saturday at famed Rosenblatt Stadium. The game will be aired on ESPN.
The “Go Purple Weekend” mirrors the same show of support the city displayed for the TCU football team when it faced Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.
